First time auto flowering feminized outdoor planter grow journal

I know there are plenty of sites out there that you can use to create a perfect grow journal for growing your own marijuana  but I wanted to mainly do it for myself and didn’t need another website to go to. So I figure why not just do a post here and share it.

First of all let me say that you must first check your local laws before you start growing your own marijuana. I am no way endorsing the use or it if it is illegal where you are.

Before I get to my journal, I will say how weed has helped me. I do not actually like smoking it. At all. I hate the taste. And since I have a high tolerance for things going into my body, pills just don’t work for me. The reason I eventually decided to try smoking weed was because of a neck injury and with that insomnia came because of pain. I couldn’t sleep for more than 15 – 30 minutes before I woke up. It wasn’t just a wake up and turn over and go back to sleep. It was a wake up, get up, stretch or go get ice or heatpads, and then get back into bed 15 minutes later. I was surprised how well it worked for me the first night. I got some indica from the local dispensary after doing some research for pain/insomnia. Of course there are different strains which I won’t go into since I am a complete novice past reading a few websites.

But I was getting tired of paying $15-$25/g and figured I should have a go at growing it myself. So I did!

So with that, here is my first timer auto-flowering feminized grow journal! I will update this post as it grows and as I go so check back!

Starting details:

Seed: Crop Kings auto-flowering feminized Early Miss

Date started: April 27 2018

Location: Westcoast BC Canada

Starting seed method: cup of room temp water for 15 hours/wet paper towel method

(For the first 7 days I forgot to take pictures)

Day 1: April 27 2018

  • I decided to open my seeds I got from Crop Kings and start growing. after a few quick searches online I decided on Early Miss because of the description of pain and insomnia. Once again I am a complete novice  and didn’t know what to but luckily the seeds came with instructions! So I got a glass of room temperature water and put 2 seeds in it.I decided on 2 because of a) not wanting to possibly screw all 5 of my seeds up b) having too many to deal with and c) if it grows 2 should last me until the next grow. I shall call them Lola and Layla.

Day 2: April 28 2018

  • After the seeds were in the glass of water for 15 hours (instructions said 14-18) I took 2 pieces of paper towel and folded it in half to be a square and then reopened it on a plate. I then took my glass with the water and seeds and slowly poured the water out until it was all gone on the plate with the seeds. Folded the paper towel back over so the seeds were in it and then dumped all the excess water off the plate. I then set that plate near a fan and my baseboard heater so it stayed warm and had good airflow. I tried to check to make sure the paper towel was still wet every 2-3 hours until sleep.

Day 3: April 29 2018

  • Overnight I checked on the seeds once once around the 4 hour mark andaall was fine. Today was a warm day and I went 5 hours without checking on them the paper towel was dry as can be and thought oh crap! Immediately put water back on the plate. And made sure to check it more, hoping I didn’t kill them already.

Day 4/5/6: April 30 / May 1/2 2018

  • Both seeds cracked and started growing  their roots. Continued with paper towel watch. Also decided to put my planter pots together. Drilled some extra drain holes in the bottom, added some drain rock, then some old potting dirt then some new local “my soil” organic soil. Did a test water to see how much it takes for water to go through it.

Day 7: May 3 2018

  • Both seeds now had tails of just over 1/2 inch and it was a warm day so I decided to plant them. I put them in their own planters about an inch down and covered them up. I then had a thought of is there a proper way to have the seed. So I quickly googled and it said you want the tail down since that’s the root. DAMMIT. But I didnt want to dig them up and lose them in the dirt so I left them sideways. I left the post outside in the sun for 8 hours in direct sunlight. It was around 17°C today. Since nights still go below 10°C I brought the pots in the garage and made sure that the garage heater was on.

Todays Total sunlight: 8 hours
Todays Outside high temperature: 17°C
Todays relative humidity: ~72%

Day 8: May 4 2018

  • May the 4th be with you! I put the 2 pots out side at noon (because I slept in by accident) the weather is cloudy and the temperature is 14°C. Did 1 spray from my water bottle on top of each. At sunset I decided to move them back inside and I hooked up a CFL light and the heater in the garage since I will be gone for the next 2 days which will be on 24 hours a day until May 6th. They will most likely still be in the dirt when I get back. And I know that 1 CFL light probably isn’t going to do much but better than being out in the cold nights I think.

Todays total sunlight: 7 hours
Today’s CFL light: 5 hours
Todays average temp: 14°C
Todays relative humidity: ~72%

Day 9: May 5 2018

  • Put the pots outside at 8am as it’s now supposed to be nice and sunny for the next 2 days with an overnight low of 12°C so I put them outside next to a cement wall to gain some extra heat once the sun goes down.

Todays total sunlight: 7 hours
Today’s CFL light: 5 hours
Todays average temp: 14°C
Todays relative humidity: ~72%

Day 10-12: May 6th – 8th 2018

  • Pots have been outside 24/7. Doing slight watering morning and night keeping the soil moist. Been sunny and hot. Still no sprout. Going to bring the pots under a chair overnight since its supposed to rain.

Average daily total sunlight: 12 hours
Average daytime temp: 19°C
Average nighttime temp: 11°C
Average daytime relative humidity: ~72%
Average nighttime relative humidity: ~96%

Day 11: May 9th 2018

  • Put the pots back out into the ‘direct sun’ at 930am. Its kinda cloudy so thats why its in quotes. I felt that it was taking a long time just to sprout so I dug down (very lightly, more like feathering dirt away) and 1 pot (Lola) was just about to sprout (like just about to poke through dirt) but the other I couldn’t even find the seed (Layla).  After about an hour of going through the dirt, I finally found it. The taproot had shriveled up and the seed closed. I am guessing this is due to when I was gone for 2 days and it got dry. I followed the Crop Kings card that came with the seeds for the emergency germination method and put the seed in distilled water overnight. I put a thick garbage bag over the 1 good pot overnight while still outside to keep some heat and moisture retaining in.

Todays total sunlight: 11 hours
Todays average temp: 15°C
Todays relative humidity: ~60%

Day 12: May 10th 2018

  • Removed the plastic bag from the pot at 9am. It’s cloudy with a little rain today. I took the other trouble seed (Layla) out from the distilled water since it cracked open again overnight and has a minimal white taproot showing and put it back in the wet paper towel until it grows to 1/2″ it says. I brought Lola inside at 9:00pm as it was supposed to get 10°C or lower tonight. As I brought it in, I noticed it sprouted.

Todays total sunlight: 12 hours
Todays average temp: 13°C
Todays relative humidity: ~80%

Day 13: May 11th 2018

  • Put Lola out at 9am this morning and left the seed (Layla) inside in the paper towel. I looked at the paper towel seed and noticed that the seed split in half.  I am pretty sure this seed is a dud. but I put a little bit of dirt in the paper towel (why I dunno, it can’t hurt it) and closed it back up and watered it. we will see what it does. Lola seems to be growing good. Brought it back inside at 9:00pm as its supposed to be 10°C again. It was nice and sunny today.

Day 14: May 12th 2018

  • Well today was not a good day. Put Lola out at 930am. When I put it out I noticed that the leaves shrank but I chalked that up to overnight sleeping. Around 1pm I went to check on it since its warm out and see how the moisture was and noticed a tree leaf fell right over it. I tried to pick the leaf up carefully but some I managed to rip what leaves were growing off. It looks like there is a strong root growing so hopefully it recovers. As for the other seed that seems to be a dud, well it is. What was left of it once it split in half yesterday seems to have just decomposed into nothing and now is just a shell. It’s now in the compost. RIP Layla. Root is to the bottom right of the leaves. Leaving the pot outside overnight.

Todays total sunlight: 12 hours
Todays average temp: 20°C
Todays relative humidity: ~60%

Day 15: May 13th 2018

  • Another warm day today. Lola’s stem still seems to be there, though it is a little brown. I dunno. I hope I am not 2 for 2 on killing them. keeping the soil moist.

Todays total sunlight: 15 hours
Todays average temp: 22°C
Todays relative humidity: ~50%

Day 16: May 14th 2018 (Day 1 for new seed)

  • May sound like a copy/paste, Another warm day today. Lola’s stem still seems to be there, though it is a little brown. It seems to have shrunk a bit.  I decided to start another seed just in case I killed this one too. It went into the cup of room temp water at 7:00pm. I will call this one Lolo.

Day 17: May 15th 2018 (Day 2 for new seed)

  • Took the new seed (Lolo) out of the water at 15 hours and placed it in the paper towel. Existing pot (Lola) still doing nothing. /shrug. Checked new seed (Lolo) at 9:00pm and it cracked open.

Todays total sunlight: 15 hours

Day 18: May 16th 2018 (Day 3 for new seed)

  • Well, went out at 930am to check on Lola. And she had been uprooted by something. Attached is what is left. I decided to put it in the paper towel because why not. I doubt anything will happen.  Lolo has cracked open with a taproot coming out. God I hope Lolo works.

Day 19: May 17th 2018 (Day 4 for new seed)

  • Lolo is doing great! growing way faster than the first 2. Lola, well, looks like a dead maggot. Will probably plant tonight or tomorrow.

  • EDIT: After some recommendations saying I should get it into soil as soon as possible, I checked the seed and it grew 1/8″ in like 5 hours, so I decided to put her in the pot at 3pm! put it about 1/2″ down with the root as much as I could downwards but its mostly sideways as I didnt want to touch it (I just lightly put it in off the paper towel). 4 pictures of seed root size, depth, seed in soil, and pot.

Day 20: May 18th 2018 (Day 5 for new seed)

  • Nothing new in the morning. Looks like a pot of dirt. I also put the old root of Lola in the other pot just because.

I also took a timelapse video around 5pm for an hour and made it into a 6 second video. First picture is a morning picture at 9:30am. 2nd picture is at 8:30pm.
